E.H. Character Sketch

Einzelner (sp?) Handschuh

What is your characters name? Does the character have a nickname?

Einzelner Handschuh. I think his brother Gut would have given him a nickname. What are popular German nicknames.

What is your characters hair color? Eye color?

Warm, reddish brown eyes (kind of like Cassie from Skins). Light brown hair, kind of mousy.

What kind of distinguishing facial features does your character have?

Not sure. Long nose. Thick, dark eyebrows. I’m thinking my sketch is more fitting for the grocery delivery person.

Does your character have a birthmark? Where is it? What about scars? How did he get them?

A port-wine stain on the inside of his left upper arm. He also has a scar on his right knee & elbow. EH was pushed down on concrete (would that be present in that time period?) by bullies when he was in grade school (called this in Canada?). Both right knee and elbow were sliced open. It would have been worse but Gut stepped in.

33? Older, younger?

He had been a jeweler’s assistant if I’m keeping to my presentation. Should I change this? What did he go to school for? Would it lead to this kind of work? If not, why would he work for a jeweler. Perhaps he’s an bookkeeper? And that’s what he was doing at the jeweler? Give this a little extra thought.

Who are your characters friends and family? Who does she surround herself with? Who are the people your character is closest to? Who does he wish he were closest to?
He never met his father. The father stayed in Germany when EH’s mother left. He was very close to my mother & brother. His mother died just before my 18th birthday and his brother died 6 months prior to the telling of the story. More time/less time? Had some money saved and Gut left him a bunch of money so EH can afford to stay in the house. He was closest to Gut. He had wished to be closer with Jacco, the mailman at the jewelry store but didn’t know how to pursue that. As the story progresses, he forms a bond with his grocery delivery person. This guy eventually helps draw him out of the house

Where was your character born? Where has she lived since then? Where does she call home?
Born in Toronto and grew up in Midland. Mom immigrated to Canada from Germany before EH was born. Gut was a young boy. Father stayed in Germany and then was unable to leave due to the war. EH moved to Montreal to go to McGill. He chose McGill in part because of his brother Gut, who was already living in Montreal. In fact, it was partially G’s suggestion.

Where does your character go when he’s angry?
He doesn’t have anywhere to go but the house/his property as he is a shut in. He could designate a particular area of the house to where he goes when he’s angry. That being said he doesn’t really get angry. At least he doesn’t think he gets angry. Is this emotion pushed down deep? How does the anger present itself if he’s angry without feeling angry?

What is her biggest fear? Who has she told this to? Who would she never tell this to? Why?
His biggest fear is a two part fear. Each fear cycles into the other. He’s afraid to leave the house and afraid he’ll never leave the house again. If EH was able to talk to Gut he would never tell G that he’s been unable to leave the property since’s G’s death. He wouldn’t want Gut to blame himself.

Does she have a secret?
Yes. He’s gay. At least he’s pretty sure he’s gay. He’s never had a chance to act on those feelings. He was attached to Jacco when he was working for the jeweler but never said anything or let on his feelings were more than friendly.

What makes your character laugh out loud?

These days he doesn’t have much of an occasion to laugh as he’s stuck home by himself. That being said, Laurel and Hardy actually makes him laugh out loud. He feels a little embarrassed about it but can’t help himself all the same. There’s something about physical comedy that gets him every time.

When has your character been in love? Had a broken heart?
EH is not sure if he’s been in love but he’s felt a strong connection to other men. Jacco was one person he felt drawn to. He did not know Jacco well enough to know if his feelings could grow into love. As an extremely shy person and as a person living in the 50’s, he had not pursued these feelings. EH’s heart broke when his brother died. His love for his brother was quite strong.

Deeper questions:

What is in your characters refrigerator right now?

His fridge is pretty empty as he is waiting for a delivery. He has one egg left, butter, a couple slices of bread, the last dregs of jam, a tiny remainder of cheese, etc. When the delivery person comes he’ll have more eggs, some meat, cheese, milk, tomatoes, etc

  • On her bedroom floor?

    • His bedroom floor is quite tidy. His slippers are by his bed, there’s a throw rug on the hardwood floor (in keeping with the era?) as the floor is cold in the AM. One dark men’s sock escaped his laundry hamper but this is not usual for EH.

  • On her nightstand?

    • book (which one), cup for water at night, small lamp (Gut’s). He also keeps a small pad and paper (a little notebook). He writes in the notebook if he feels anxiety

  • In her garbage can?

    • food trash (remnants of a spoiled tomato, a few brown lettuce leaves, crumbs a half eaten sandwich he dumped out when he realized his appetite was spoiled), a crumpled letter written to “J” (Jacco)

Look at your characters feet. Describe what you see there. Does he wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Is he in socks that are ratty and full of holes? Or is he wearing a pair of blue and gold slippers knitted by his grandmother?
Plain brown leather shoes, argyle dress socks (of the era?) They’re dress shoes kind of like the animated ones from all my sons. The shoes are a little worn but EH polishes them so the wear and tear is harder to see. His sock is a little worn in the heel mostly because he is now unable to go out and replace them.

When your character thinks of her childhood kitchen, what smell does she associate with it? Sauerkraut? Oatmeal cookies? Paint? Why is that smell so resonant for her?
EH remembers sausages and sauerkraut. His mother was a German immigrant and did not want her children to miss out on the

Your character is doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for her to throw out? What is difficult for her to part with? Why?
EH brings in very little waste (mostly just perishable food waste). He is also extremely attached to Gut’s belongings. As such he does not able to part with much. His home is kind of like a time capsule. Keeping things in a static state gives him the illusion of control.

It’s Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. If he’s eating breakfast, what exactly does he eat? If shes stretching out in her backyard to sun, what kind of blanket or towel does she lie on?

On Saturdays, EH receives his grocery delivery around noon. (Why’d he pick this?)

What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?

Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where is she going? What does she wear? Who will she be with?

EH does not leave the house. Sometimes he dresses up and gets ready as if he is going out, in partial hopes that he will actually be able to leave the house if he prepares this time around. But as the time to leave the house comes and goes, EH is stuck. He’d wear a three piece brown suit or brown suit with sweater vest over his button down shirt. He has a tendency to dress as an older man, in partial emulation of Gut. He is also stuck with his meager clothes and Gut’s old wardrobe
